Those "artifacts" have mental control, like indoctrination, but not in a harms way. Leviathan used them to observe and manipulate the outside world from the planet were they are safely hiding.

If I remember correctly those "artifacts" will be revealed due the Leviathan DLC in ME3. Possibly, the geth have seen other Reaper orbs or similar artifacts (I believe Object Rho from Arrival is similar), so them crafting or worshipping an orb could be akin to cargo cult behavior. Much like how you can find Dragon's Teeth buried in a mine on an uncharted world to foreshadow that those aren't geth technology either. So rather than a form of indoctrination or mind control, I think this is simply meant to foreshadow the reveal that Sovereign is a Reaper that the geth worship.
HUMAN REAPER LEVIATHAN FREE
They left to worship Sovereign of their own free will (this is often confused for the virus developed that would have induced the rest of the geth to join them - that is what Legion compares to indoctrination). However, the Leviathans clearly weren't thought up yet at the time of this, and in any event, it's stated several times by Legion that the Heretic Geth were not indoctrinated. You can see them as an early form of the Leviathan orbs the latter used to control their thralls. I don't think any of the hints from ME1 are explicitly connected in-game to what we learn about the heretic geth in ME2, but it seems reasonable to conclude that they're related. One room in the Reaper IFF mission is explicitly compared to an altar, and Legion's loyalty mission has several references to religion. Moving on to ME2, we find out from Legion that some geth do actually worship the reapers as the Old Machines. At least in ME1 it's left as a mystery with no real answer it's just more world building. And I think there's also a ship or compound you find through exploring random systems that the characters point out looks like it's used for religious ceremonies. IIRC in one of the side missions where you search a cluster to root out a geth incursion before it gains a foothold, you intercept a geth transmission that sounds a lot like a sermon of some kind of an unsuited quarian singing a lament. There are a couple hints in ME1 that the geth have their own culture/religion, and this is one of them.
